Wordpress is a free, easy to use, sophisticated and innovative website publishing application and content management system. It can be downloaded and installed relatively quickly and allows the user to blog and create content immediately after installation.
A background in HTML or website design is not required when using Wordpress. Anyone can create a wordpress blog, template or website.
History of Wordpress
Wordpress was started in 2003 and is still going strong. In fact, there are two sites dedicated to providing support for wordpress users; wordpress.com and wordpress.org.
- The Wordpress publishing platform and content management system originated in 2003 from another blogging system known as B2/Café.
- B2/Café was created in 2001 by Michael Valdrighi.
- The B2/Café blogging system was scheduled for closure in 2003 and an innovative user by the name of Matt Mullenweg made the decision to create another blogging platform using B2/Café’s codebase.
- Michael Valdrighi, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little teamed together to create a fundamentally different type of blogging platform called Wordpress.
The team that created Wordpress focused on providing website designers and bloggers with the ability to create a polished and professional looking site that was easy to use and came with a wide variety of design options.
Website Design Using Wordpress
Wordpress websites are designed primarily for blogging purposes, however, there are an endless number of websites that utilize the Wordpress publishing system. In fact, there are hundreds of templates to choose from that will fit almost every type or genre of website on the internet today.

Wordpress users do not have to have knowledge of HTML or CSS coding and can create, design and modify a website with relative ease.
Managing Content Using Wordpress
Once the Wordpress publishing application has been installed the user can log into the admin panel to create content and manage the website.
- Content is created through individual posts or pages that can include articles, pictures, videos and links.
- Changing or deleting content can be done with the click of a button. The user simply logs into the admin panel clicks on the post or page that needs to be changed and either goes right into the content to modify the wording or pictures or simply clicks to delete the entire post or page.
- Adding pictures and video to a post or as a post is also done with the click of a button. The user simply clicks to add a new post or page and then clicks on a “add video” or “add photo” button.
- Wordpress comes with a variety of plug-ins and widgets that can make a website stand out and have a polished and professional look.
Managing wordpress is quick and easy and changes or updates can be completed within minutes. Posts, plug-ins, widgets and pages can be added or deleted with the simple click of a button.
